EXPERIENCE
Gaylord in DC program & Indian Country Today (fall 2021) - I am currently working as Gaylord News’ only DC correspondent for Indigenous affairs. I specialize in Supreme Court coverage and any Oklahoma legislation coverage having to do with Indigenous nations in Oklahoma and beyond. I also do additional national assignments for Indian Country Today to help fill the holes they have in both their DC bureau and their Oklahoma tribal coverage, but I’ve freelanced for Indian Country Today since July 2020.
News21 Program, ASU (summer 2021) - I was the lead writer on a national project covering how the pandemic affected Indigenous communities; travelled to multiple states for coverage in various reservations around the country, including Navajo reservation, the Yurok reservation and the Blackfeet reservation. I was also featured in episode three of our podcast for the project.
John Hopkins University (June 2020-May 2021) - I worked during pandemic lockdown as a data collection volunteer for John Hopkins’ and Indian Country Today’s data collection efforts for mapping the impacts of COVID-19 on Indian Country nationwide. Here is the letter of recommendation from the John Hopkins Center for American Indian Health on my contributions to their project, where they highlight how they used data collection methods I pioneered in their own data efforts. Here is the map where my data was used; note that I was part of the decision-making process into how the map’s data was visualized because of my background in data visualization and production. At my height I was monitoring and managing data in over 100 tribes across about 10 different states, while working from home. I also met with the Data Institute for Societal Challenges to discuss my data work and the study will be published in The Lancet peer-reviewed academic journal.
Organizations I’m a member of: Native American Journalists Association; Society of Professional Journalists; Investigative Reporters and Editors; the National Freedom of Information Coalition.
Conferences I’ve attended:
IRE Virtual Conference 2020FOIA Bootcamp for Journalists of Color, NFOIC 2021SPJ Conference 2021NFOIC’s 2021 Virtual Summit
SKILLS
Fully trained in writing and multimedia skills; print, photojournalism, broadcast, radio/podcasting, etc.
